The Speculation Game...

I just found an unofficial Peace Corps website, http://www.peacecorpswiki.org/timeline, which provides a list of departure dates currently known. This information is apparently provided by applicants who have already received their invitation from the specific country.

Because I am about to burst with anticipation, I've been doing a bit of speculating with this information.

I was nominated for a math teaching position in non-french speaking Africa departing between July and September. From what I gathered from my interview, a science teaching position seems to be the fallback.

Last Friday, I received an email requesting my latest resume, and it stated the following:
"Once I have received your resume, your file will be passed on to the Education Desk Placement and Assessment Specialist for further review."
The minimum notice before departure is 6 weeks, while the maximum is 3 months. The invitation apparently is preceded by a call from the placement officer. And I have found that some people get this call within a week after the email, others still months away.

Below is the list of departure dates from the wiki website for my nominated months. I have eliminated the countries that are french speaking, and placed what are my most likely destinations, those being in Africa and non-french speaking in italics.

July 1 = Mali - French Speaking
July 1 = Malawi - Africa
July 7 = Liberia - Africa

July 7 = Niger - French Speaking
July 12 = South Africa - Africa
July 14 = Benin - Africa
July 15 = Cape Verde - Africa
July 19 = Zambia - Africa

July 19 = Madagascar - French Speaking
July 20 = Cambodia
July 20 = El Salvador

August 3 = Uganda - Africa
August 10 = Guatemala
August 17 = Panama
August 18 = Kazakhstan
August 18 = Dominican Republic
August 19 = Philippines
August 23 = Eastern Caribbean
August 31 = Nicaragua

September 1 = Micronesia and Palau
September 10 = Vanuatu
September 13 = Ethiopia - Africa
September 13 = Morocco - French Speaking
September 15 = Cameroon - French Speaking

September 16 = Peru
September 23 = Azerbaijan
September 29 = Paraguay

My guess is that I am already past the Malawi departure listed above, since it is so early in July. The other July dates are coming on soon, too. I am somewhat concerned that there is only one location in August, and another one in September that matches my nomination, but I'll just have to keep the trust on this one.

I think that if I am to be invited for one of the July departures, I should be hearing within the next two weeks. I've gotten pretty good at the waiting thing over the past year, but it sure is getting harder.

  1. Hey, Mike. Just a heads up. Don't cross Liberia off your list just yet! The official language actually is English :)

  2. Thanks Jess. Its good to have another country back on the list! I still wonder if July departures are still possible, since I just received the email requesting updates last Friday, but I'm keeping the hope.

  3. July is definitely still a possibility! I just looked at my calendar, and the six-week deadline for July 1 is May 20 and May 26 for July 7. So you definitely still have time. My best advice is to send in your updates as soon as possible! My guess is that if they're considering you for any of the July dates, you'll hear something very soon after you send them in :)
